A book on CD for kids, Sunshine on my Shoulders follows the lyrics of a song by John Denver making it the perfect sing along book for toddlers. This preschool music book is a great teaching tool for young readers about the world around us and our responsibility to preserve and protect it.

This exuberant adaptation of John Denver's famous song is "sure to make you smile," even on a dark and cuddly evening with your child. It helps if you can sing—the musical score is included—or just pop in the CD that comes with the hardback edition of the book. Sunshine On My Shoulders celebrates friendship, sunshine and the simple joy of being together. A charming little girl and her father (who kind of looks like John Denver) enjoy a day together in the sun with a guitar, butterflies, a cat, a mouse, and lots of other critters. Canyon's illustrations abound with light, color and lots of humorous detail.

The lyrics of late pop singer/songwriter Denver live on in this hokey picture-book interpretation of one of his biggest hits, the first of a planned series inspired by his songs. In a biographical note on the final pages, readers learn that Denver wrote "Sunshine" during the Vietnam War as an antidote to the troubles of that time. Striving to reflect that lightness, Canyon (The Tree in the Ancient Forest) offers summery, greeting-card watercolors of a girl, along with her guitar-strumming father and often-anthropomorphic cat, enjoying fairly stereotypical outdoor pleasures. For example, he pictures the girl blissfully posed on a swing in mid-air, a huge (and oddly low) sun in the background ("Sunshine almost always makes me high"); meanwhile, on a tree branch above, a bird feeds her young in their nest. Unfortunately, the characters look more saccharine than sweet, given their sunburst eyelashes and perma-grins. A printed score and a CD recording of Denver singing the title tune as well as "The Music Is You," is included. All ages. (Sept.)FYI: A paperback edition, which does not include the CD, is set for simultaneous publication ($8.95 -050-X).

The lyrics and music to John Denver's "Sunshine on My Shoulders" are accompanied by soft-focus color illustrations of a frizzy-haired, long-eyelashed tyke enjoying a sunny day with her cat and her dad. The sappy art, which is filled with daisies and dandelion fluff, seems better suited for a sentimental greeting card. A CD of Denver singing "Sunshine" and "The Music Is You" is included.
